Professor Stephen Phua is a Senior Consultant at RHTLaw Asia and brings a wealth of experience to his practice area of taxation.
Upon his admission to the bar in Singapore in 1991, Professor Phua has earned a strong reputation for his modules in Tax, VAT/GST, International Tax Law and Business & Finance for Lawyers in the Faculty of Law at National University of Singapore, as well as being a frequent speaker and visiting faculty in several leading institutions in Singapore and internationally.
Professor Phua has earned the distinction of being the first legal scholar from Singapore to be appointed by the Shanghai Municipality as an Eastern Scholar from 2012 – 2015. He has presented papers in many international conferences and published articles in refereed journals and chapters in books and is the editor of two books.
Professor Phua served as a member on each all the three tax tribunals (Income Tax Board of Review, GST Board of Review and Valuation Review Board) for more than a decade on each Board. He was also a part-time consultant in IRAS for a period of time and is consulted regularly by some tax authorities in the PRC. In 2012, he established the Center for International Tax Law in East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai, PRC where he served as its International Director for several years.
