TechLawFest is Singapore’s leading annual conference on law and technology, bringing together almost 4,000 professionals from over 100 countries. At this year’s TechLaw.Fest, our Legal Technology Development Manager Stella Chen spoke on the topic “What Google won’t tell you about automating documents: Tips from a full-time doc automator”.

Stella shared from her past three years of experience in spearheading RHTLaw Asia’s document automation projects across areas as diverse as corporate & capital markets, debt collection and real estate. Some highlights:

  1. Understand Your Users’ Needs – what pain points do you hope to solve by adopting document automation? E.g. do you want to produce commonly-used documents more efficiently, or to standardise a key document throughout your organisation? This will inform how you manage the project and design the documents.
  2. Engage Key People – RHTLaw’s success at document automation came from the management’s support and from actively engaging those who would use the automated documents in the automation process.

Stella manages RHTLaw Asia’s document automation and other legal technology projects. In her close to three years in this role, she has automated documents in a diverse range of practice areas, including corporate and capital markets, debt collection, and real estate. Her role involves drafting templates based on existing documents and coding them into automated templates using the firm’s Hotdocs software. Stella was called to the Bar in 2016 but considers her job much more interesting than legal practice.
