Wai Cheong is a dual-qualified (Singapore and Hong Kong) lawyer. He has extensive experience in banking and finance, as well as real estate, and has worked as both a practicing lawyer and an in-house legal counsel.
As a practicing lawyer, Wai Cheong has represented various parties in financing transactions, including bilateral and syndicated financing, operating and finance leases, and cross-border deals involving different asset classes, such as real estate, commodities, and ships. He has also advised on derivatives transactions, foreign exchange, and margin trading. Notably, Wai Cheong has represented several Singapore banks in transactions involving the financing of acquisitions of shares in Singapore companies listed on the Singapore Exchange, in connection with the take-over and acquisition of such companies.
Wai Cheong is also highly regarded for his extensive real estate experience and has been consistently ranked as a “Recommended Lawyer” for Real Estate in the Legal 500 Asia-Pacific. He frequently represents purchasers and vendors in the sale and purchase and financing of residential, commercial, and industrial properties in Singapore and Hong Kong. Additionally, he has advised developers in connection with the purchase, development, and financing of land for both residential and commercial purposes, as well as landlords and tenants in connection with leases of residential, industrial, and commercial property, and industrial property owners in sales and leasebacks.
In addition to his prior stint at RHTLaw Asia, Wai Cheong was also previously the General Counsel for Asia and the Head of Legal for Singapore for an European bank and the Head of Capital Markets Legal for South Asia and the Head of Legal for Singapore for another European bank. His broad experience in both private practice and in-house legal roles has given him a well-rounded perspective on the legal and commercial aspects of complex financial and real estate transactions.
