Shaun is a Partner with RHTLaw Asia’s International China Practice. He is a triple-qualified bilingual lawyer who focuses on China-related complex international disputes. Shaun has particular experience with disputes in the cryptocurrency, oil and gas, energy, construction, infrastructure and mining, international trade, technology and telecommunications and healthcare sectors, and has represented clients in commercial litigations in Singapore as well as in commercial arbitrations and industrial arbitration in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Background Information

In addition to his practice as counsel, Shaun has a developing practice as an arbitrator and has received appointments as sole and party-appointed arbitrator in proceedings seated in various jurisdictions, including bilingual English-Chinese arbitrations and arbitrations governed by Chinese law, English law, Singapore law and CISG. Shaun has been appointed to panels of arbitrators at various arbitral institutions.

Shaun is also an accredited commercial mediator with over 10 years of experience in mediating cross-border and cross-cultural commercial disputes. He serves as a court-appointed mediator at the State Courts of Singapore and has been appointed to the panels of mediators at various mediation institutions such as Singapore Mediation Centre, Consumers Association of Singapore, and Shenzhen Qianhai International Commercial Mediation Centre, China.

As a strong believer of professional practicality, Shaun is often complemented for providing expedient and effective solutions that serve the best commercial interests of the clients by combining his diverse experience and skills in litigation, arbitration, mediation, and negotiation.

Shaun is professionally bilingual in both Mandarin Chinese and English. He is capable of conducting any proceedings in both languages. With his unique cultural background, Shaun takes up the role of converging Chinese culture and legal tradition and legal practices of common law or vice versa.

Prior to joining RHTLaw Asia, Shaun was trained at a boutique firm headed by a senior counsel.

Education

  • Shaun was admitted as Advocate and Solicitor in Singapore (2016), as Solicitor in England and Wales (2018) and as an attorney-at-law in New York State, USA (2020).
  • Shaun attained his Bachelor of Science (Biology) from the National University of Singapore in 2003 and his Master of Science (Computers in biological research) from New York University in 2007, before he attained his Juris Doctor from Singapore Management University in 2015.

International Arbitration

  • Acted as the leading counsel for the Singapore subsidiary of a Chinese company for claims relating to the long-term supply of commodity products with the disputed amount exceeding 150 million US dollars.
  • Acted as the instructed counsel for a Chinese company for claims relating to the M&A contract of a Korean group of companies against a Japanese MNC.
  • Acted as the leading counsel for a Chinese company in an international trade dispute with the US importer with the disputed amount of more than 6 million US dollars.
  • Acted as the leading counsel for the Chinese Listco in claims relating to a long-term supply of goods contract with the disputed amount over 11 Million US dollars.
  • Acted as the lead counsel and instructed US counsel based in New York for the client in his employment disputes with his US-based former employer with the disputed amount of more than 11 million US dollars.
  • Represented the main contractor in an infrastructure construction disputes against the owner with the disputed amount of more than 50 million US dollars (equivalent).
  • Acted as the leading counsel for a Chinese client in a partnership dispute, with the disputed amount of more than 2 million US dollars.

Court

  • Acted as the leading counsel in a dispute between a Chinese company and the French investor relating to their collaboration agreement with the disputed amount of over 6 million Euros.
  • Acted as the leading counsel for the Defendant in successfully staying the proceedings on the ground of Forum Non Conveniens.
  • Acted as the leading counsel for the Applicant in successfully enforcing a foreign arbitral award, which judgment is reported as [2022] SGHC 58.
