Roderick Martin, SC is a Senior Partner and Head of RHTLaw Asia’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practice. His legal career spans more than four decades with an active practice in civil litigation and international arbitration, where he specialises in complex cases. Mr Martin SC has appeared at all levels of the Singapore courts, including all levels of the Singapore International Commercial Court (“SICC”), in which he was successful in the first-ever cross appeal to the Court of Appeal in the SICC.

Background Information

After graduating from the University of Singapore in 1972, Mr Martin SC has devoted his time to both private practice and legal service, including an eight-year term as Registrar of the Supreme Court. In recognition of his elite advocacy, professional integrity, and knowledge of the law, Mr Martin SC was appointed Senior Counsel on 7 January 2011.

With his wealth of knowledge and impeccable credentials, Mr Martin SC has also been deeply involved in legal academia in Singapore. He previously served as a lecturer in the Law Faculty of the University of Singapore as well as the Practical Postgraduate Course for Civil Litigation and Civil Procedure. He continues to educate junior lawyers as a trainer at the annual Litigation Conference organised by the Law Society.

  • Qilin World Capital Ltd v CPIT Investments Ltd and another appeal[2018] 2 SLR; Qilin World Capital Ltd v CPIT Investments Ltd and another appeal [2018] SGCA (I) 4 - First ever successful cross-appeal from the SICC to the Court of Appeal over a matter relating to a non-recourse loan of shares listed on the Hong Kong Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) Index; Landmark case on costs to be awarded in the SICC
  • Singapore Airlines Ltd v CSDS Aircraft Sales & Leasing Inc[2019] SGHCR 8; Singapore Airlines Ltd v CSDS Aircraft Sales & Leasing Inc [2020] 5 SLR 221; [2020] SGHC(I) 18 – Successfully acted on behalf of an aircraft broker against a national carrier in having a default judgment set aside in relation to a claim of approximately US$6.25 million; successfully transferred to the SICC (See Straits Times Report)
  • Ad Hoc Arbitration under the Arbitration Act (2020)  – Successfully acted on behalf of a law firm against their professional indemnity insurers
  • Ma Kar Sui Anthony and others v Yap Sing Lee and another appeal[2018] SGHC 30 – Succeeded on appeal in a defamation claim and overturning a counterclaim, acting for a MCST against a sole proprietor in an apartment complex
  • HC/CM 78/2015 - Acted for Mr Yak Yew Chee, former managing director of BSI, in a criminal motion to successfully have monies remitted to his client from overseas without seizure by the Commercial Affairs Department (See Business Times Report)
  • Li Siu Lun v Looi Kok Poh and Another[2015] 4 SLR 667 – successfully acted on behalf a patient in claiming S$250,000 against a surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital  for a botched operation (See Straits Times Report)

Thought Leadership 

He has presented several papers, including one on the Rules of Supreme Court (Amendment No. 2) at a seminar jointly organised by the Academy of Law and the Law Society in 1991. Roderick’s other paper presentations included “Advocacy in Interlocutory Applications” at a Legal Workshop for practitioners sponsored by the Law Society of Singapore, “Reciprocal Enforcement of Foreign Judgments” at the Asean Law Conference in Manila and the “Sentencing of Young Adult Offenders” at the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute of Crime Prevention and the Treatment of Offenders in Tokyo.
