We are deeply honoured to confer Mr LP Thean the title of Senior Honorary Fellow of RHTLaw Asia LLP. We would like to take this opportunity to recognise his years of service and significant contributions to the firm and the Singapore legal profession.
Mr Thean Lip Ping, better known as LP Thean or simply “LP”, as he is affectionately referred to in the legal profession, has extensive legal and judicial experience. He was in legal practice in Kuala Lumpur from July 1958 to November 1964 and in Singapore from November 1964 to January 1984. Mr Thean was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Singapore from 1984 to 1993 and as a Judge of Appeal in the Court of Appeal from 1993 till his retirement in February 2002. The judgments which he delivered as a Judge of the High Court and as a member of the Court of Appeal have been extensively reported in the Singapore Law Reports. He then joined RHTLaw Asia as Senior Consultant on 3 January 2012.
Mr Thean was an exemplary lawyer. In 2009, the Law Society of Singapore awarded Mr Thean the prestigious C C Tan Award, which honours a member who exemplifies the highest traditional qualities of the Bar. Mr Thean’s excellent judicial temperament was also well-known.
Mr Thean has also contributed to legal scholarship in Singapore. In 1998, he delivered the 12th Singapore Law Review Lecture on “The Enforcement of a Performance Bond: The Perspective of the Underlying Contract”. In 2008, he contributed a book chapter titled “Appellate Advocacy” in Modern Advocacy: Perspectives from Singapore.
