ANG Chong Yi

Partner

Ang Chong Yi is a Partner in the Corporate and Capital Markets Practice of RHTLaw Asia and specialises in Banking and Finance. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 2012.

Prior to joining RHTLaw Asia, Chong Yi was a member of a US law firm specialising in asset finance.

With nine years of working experience in aviation and maritime finance, Chong Yi regularly advises state-owned enterprises, international financial institutions and corporations in connection with a variety of aircraft fleet, LNG, offshore and maritime financings. He has also advised on several debt restructuring and enforcement projects in the transportation sector.

Chong Yi’s advisory efforts for a leading Chinese leasing company in respect of a ¥20 billion samurai loan, coupled with a cross-currency swap from a leading Japanese bank, led him to winning “Innovative Deal of the Year” at the AFJ China Awards 2018.

Chong Yi is fluent in Mandarin.

  • Advised a Malaysian state-owned company on a bespoke non-recourse US$1 billion facility for the financing of a high specification Semi-FPS unit which harvests 25% of Malaysia’s daily petroleum consumption.
  • Advised a Malaysian state-owned company on a series of three non-recourse facility agreements from a syndicate of banks aggregating US$450 million in loan value, in relation to a sub-fleet of three LNG carriers.
  • Acted as financier’s counsel on a $600 million lease financing transaction between four subsidiaries of a leading government-linked Chinese leasing company (as owner) and a global shipping conglomerate in relation to the acquisition of four 24,000 TEU containerships (the world’s largest containerships as of March 2018).
  • Acted as financier’s counsel on a $360 million lease financing transaction between four subsidiaries of a leading government-linked Chinese leasing company (as owner) and an operational subsidiary of a leading PRC-based transportation company (as charterer), in relation to the financing of four 400,000 DWT bulk ore carriers.
  • Acted as financier’s counsel on a EUR280 million sale and leaseback financing transaction between a leading international cruise ship operator and the subsidiary of a leading government-linked Chinese leasing and vessel construction company (as owner), in relation to the acquisition of a passenger cruise ship built in Fincantieri, Italy.
  • Acted as financier’s counsel on a EUR500 million sale and leaseback financing transaction between various subsidiaries of a Norwegian-based passenger cruise (as charterers) and various subsidiaries of a leading government-linked Chinese leasing company (as owners), in relation to the acquisition of two passenger cruises ships built in Fincantieri, Italy.
  • Acted as financier’s counsel on a $460 million lease financing transaction between two subsidiaries of a leading government-linked Chinese leasing company (as owners) and a Greek shipping company (as charterer), in relation to the financing of two newbuild FSRU vessels (the first to be constructed in China).
  • Advised ICBC on a $500 million lease financing transaction between two subsidiaries of ICBC leasing and subsidiaries of Shelf Drilling (as charterer), in relation to the financing of two newbuild jack-up vessels.
  • Advised a leading Chinese leasing company in respect of a JPY 20 Billion Samurai loan coupled with a cross currency swap, from a leading Japanese bank (AFJ China Awards 2018 – Winner of Innovative Deal of the Year).
  • Advised a leading US-based aircraft lessor on a portfolio purchase of 22 Aircraft (leased to various Asian, Middle Eastern and US-based airlines) from CMIG.
  • Advised a leading Chinese leasing company on a portfolio purchase of 10 aircraft from Dubai Aerospace.
  • Advised a joint venture entity on the purchase (via conditional sale agreement) of a fleet of five Airbus A320 aircraft from a leading international lessor, coupled with the contemporaneous US$150 million fleet financing thereof, with a syndicate of international banks.
